Search algorithm

A search algorithm is a formula used to determine how to retrieve and rank web pages in order of relevance to a search query. Most search engines have multiple algorithms they use to determine content’s relevance to a query, importance relative to other pages, and authority on a subject matter.

Search engines continuously update and tweak their algorithms in order to improve the quality of their search results. Google Penguin, Google Panda, Google Pigeon and Google Hummingbird are some of the best-known search algorithm updates.
